I'm setting up Pipedrive for our B2B sales team and I'm not sure which custom fields to create. What custom fields do you recommend for tracking complex B2B deals?

We sell enterprise software with long sales cycles (3-6 months) and need to track multiple stakeholders.

Essential Custom Fields for B2B Sales

Deal-Level Custom Fields:

1. Sales Process Tracking

  • Lead Source (Dropdown): Inbound, Outbound, Referral, Partnership, Event
  • Decision Timeline (Date): When they plan to make a decision
  • Budget Confirmed (Yes/No): Has budget been approved?
  • Authority Level (Dropdown): C-Level, VP, Manager, Individual Contributor
  • Competition (Text): Which competitors are they considering?

2. Deal Qualification (BANT Framework)

  • Budget Range (Dropdown): $10k-$50k, $50k-$100k, $100k+
  • Authority Confirmed (Yes/No)
  • Need Identified (Text): What problem are they solving?
  • Timeline (Dropdown): This Quarter, Next Quarter, This Year

3. Technical Requirements

  • Integration Needs (Multiple Choice): Salesforce, HubSpot, Custom API, None
  • User Count (Number): How many seats needed?
  • Deployment Type (Dropdown): Cloud, On-Premise, Hybrid

Organization-Level Custom Fields:

  • Company Size (Dropdown): 1-50, 51-200, 201-1000, 1000+
  • Industry (Dropdown): SaaS, Finance, Healthcare, etc.
  • Annual Revenue (Number)
  • Tech Stack (Text): What tools they currently use
  • Parent Company (Organization link): For tracking enterprise relationships

Person-Level Custom Fields:

  • Role in Decision (Dropdown): Champion, Decision Maker, Influencer, End User
  • LinkedIn URL (Text)
  • Pain Points (Text): Their specific challenges
  • Last Engagement Date (Date)

Implementation Tips:

  1. Start small: Add 5-10 critical fields first, expand later
  2. Make fields required at stage changes: Require "Budget Confirmed" before moving to Proposal stage
  3. Use consistent naming: Prefix related fields (e.g., "BANT - Budget", "BANT - Authority")
  4. Create field dependencies: Only show certain fields based on deal value or type

Warning: Don't create too many custom fields! Every field adds friction. Only add fields that directly impact your sales process or reporting.

Reporting on Custom Fields:

Once set up, create dashboards to track:

  • Win rate by Lead Source
  • Average deal cycle by Industry
  • Pipeline value by Budget Range
  • Deals stuck in each stage (missing required fields)
